Achievements
Microsolar
SolarAid Kenya started operations in January 2009 by recruiting and training SunnyMoney entrepreneurs to bring clean and affordable light into the homes of Kenya's poorest communities. Although the office is in Nairobi, entrepreneurs are largely based in Western Kenya (North Bongoma and Mahuro Bay). Sales of solar products have also reached Migori, Nyatike, Royia, Sotik, Tarime and Rachuonyu. In total 1387 microsolar units have been sold.
Macrosolar
The macrosolar programme began in August 2009 with the installation of solar systems on schools and clinics as the priority. In order to ensure longevity, the training of local people to maintain the panels and set up income-generating activities has been key to a succesful first year. Still in its early stages of development, the Kenyan team have installed 30 macrosolar systems. In addition, the 'Solar Roller', a mobile education centre and solar cinema, raises awareness of renewable energy in rural Kenya.
